Key Statistics Insights:

1. The "Winning Big but Losing Often" Paradox

Although the Reward/Risk ratio of the given strategy exceeds 2:1 (in other words, each winning trade is more than twice as large as each losing trade), the trading strategy still generates an impressive net loss during the year. This is explained by the extremely low percentage of winners – only 26%. Thus, the number of losing trades exceeds the number of winning ones by more than 2 times. In other words, the strategy loses more often than it wins, and the occasional large wins cannot offset the continuous smaller losses.

2. GBP/JPY is the Most Risky Instrument

Among all 5 pairs, GBP/JPY generated the worst results during the whole year, resulting in the biggest drawdown (-3,447 pips). GBP/JPY is also characterized by the worst trade with -89 pips. Therefore, GBP/JPY appears to be the instrument with the highest volatility; however, the deep drawdown occurs when losing trades take place.

3. The Best Individual Trade is 3 Times Larger Than the Average Win

Although the average winning trade is about +125 pips, the largest trade resulted in the +187 pips profit for the pair EUR/JPY. This means that sometimes, the strategy manages to capture the exceptional trend, which generates the win almost 50% larger than the usual win size. Nevertheless, such outliers appear rarely; thus, they hardly affect the overall negative result.

4. You Would Have Lost Pips on All Weeks

During the 12 months, the trading strategy generated the average loss of 257 pips per week. Thus, on average, you would end up with a negative result each week. Even though some winning days or weeks take place, the average negative result per week does not change.

The Bottom Line

Gold Trader Alliance is an automated Telegram-based trading signal service, which has been operating for about 3 years and currently has over 43,000 subscribers. It focuses primarily on New York trading session and provides 1–3 trading signals per day in the following asset classes: Gold, GBP/USD, GBP/JPY, EUR/JPY, EUR/AUD. The channel's trading style includes day trading and swing trading, with the average holding periods of up to 8 hours.

Advantages

  • Reasonable Reward/Risk Ratio – With a ratio of 2.08, an average winning trade (+125 pips) is almost twice larger than an average losing one (-60 pips). A reasonable way of managing risks, indeed.

  • Good Market Mix – The channel covers both safe-haven assets and major/minor forex pairs, which can be viewed as a good market mix.

  • Longevity – Having over 43,000 subscribers and being in business for 3 years, the channel definitely proved its viability and popularity.

Disadvantages

  • Crucially Low Win Rate – At 28% of winning trades, the win rate is unacceptably low even for such a good reward/risk ratio (as stated above).

  • Consistent Losses – Within one year, the channel accumulated negative results, losing -13,382 pips in total, which means that on average, subscribers lose -257 pips per week.

  • Poor Performance of GBP/JPY – Being the only loser among all pairs, the GBP/JPY lost -3,400 pips and showed the biggest single losing trade of -89 pips. The volatility is probably working against the strategy more often than not.

  • Low Signal Volume – Although the service claims 1–3 trading signals per day, in practice the average signal number per instrument is less than 1 (0.9).

Our Rating: Bad

Final verdict: The channel has a professional appearance and a decent risk/reward structure. However, an extreme low win rate makes the strategy a losing one. In one year, the channel would accumulate losses gradually, because even with occasional wins, there would be more losing days than winning ones.

Surely, the channel may attract those traders who enjoy a high-risk/high-reward strategy and do not expect to win often. However, considering the numbers, the channel does not look like a good signal provider.
